Message from Producer Director – Carl Horton

Please welcome to the stage… Hamilton’s own Follies…a tribute to legendary musicians, comedians, and performers of our time.

The Follies is an eclectic cast comprised of people from all walks of life, including retired steelworkers, homemakers, business executives and university professors.  Yet, on stage, their transformations will astonish you.  Showgirls, hams, and terrific entertainers will wow you.  Through the shows these dynamic individuals are able to use their creativity and artistry to inspire and entertain.

I want to thank all the members of the cast for their contributions to enriching the lives of each other and our audiences.  Most of all, I want to thank YOU, the audience.  Your faithful support is the reason that we are here today.  Each show is produced for YOU, to celebrate the entertainment of our time.  Let’s go on with the show!

Bio

Carl Horton was born in Warsaw, Indiana, U.S.A., and he proudly maintains citizenship for both Canada and the United States.

Primarily self-taught as pianist, composer, and arranger, Carl began his professional career in 1979 as a sideman and accompanist to some of Canada’s musical greats – Ronnie Hawkins, Ian Thomas, Guido Basso and Jude Johnson among them. In 1984 Carl assisted in writing a curriculum of music appreciation for the Hamilton Separate School Board called Sound All Around.  The same year, Carl became the music director and arranger for the Geritol Follies. Having developed an interest in electronic music and synthesis, in 1989 Carl joined the Faculty of Music of Mohawk College of Applied Arts and Science as lecturer pro tempor of Electronic Music and Business of Music. Carl has written numerous film scores, among them the holiday classic Home for Christmas starring Mickey Rooney. He has received awards for music written for advertising (400 jingles and counting) and scored many television shows for CITY-TV, CTV, LIFE, Bravo, among many others.

Performance highlights include performances for Prince Charles, Prime Minister Jean Chretien, and President George H.W. Bush. In demand as a recording session player and as a concert accompanist, Carl keeps a very busy performance schedule. He has an extensive library of the popular music of the 20th Century and is recognized as an authority on the subject.  Carl is quick to recognize his many teachers, first among them the remarkable cast of the Follies.

In addition to producing and directing, Carl Horton is on the Faculty of Music at Mohawk College and Recording Arts of Canada.  His greatest love remains playing the piano, and he is one of the finest accompanists in Canada.

Bio

I came to Canada in 1963 from Glasgow, Scotland with my husband Jim and son Jeffrey. Two years later we had Scott, then Grant.  I worked in physiotherapy for 20 years. Two years after I retired in 1997, I joined the Follies.  I was first in the choir, and then I joined the dance team in the fall of 2001. Chris Hamilton was taking some time off and asked if I would be the Master of Ceremonies.  I was in shock. I’d never been on stage before I joined the Follies. She gave me the weekend to think about it.  Well I did and here I am.  I owe it all to Chris; she has given thousands of senior’s joy and inspiration.  I know she’s up there rooting for me.

A Wee Joke from Marion:

“I feel like my body has gotten totally out of shape, so I got my doctor’s permission to join a fitness club and start exercising... I decided to take an aerobics class for Seniors.  I bent, twisted, gyrated, jumped up and down, and perspired for an hour.  But, by the time I got my leotards on, the class was over.”
